THE STAPLETONS
During their first night at Baskerville’s Hall, Dr. Watson and Sir Henry heard a woman crying, and therefore imagined it could be Mr. Barrymore’s wife. When they asked him the next morning, Barrymore claimed: “My wife was not crying last night, you must be mistaken”. But when Dr. Watson ran into Mrs. Barrymore, Mr. Barrymore’s wife’s eyes were red and swollen as if she had been crying. “Why Barrymore should lie and why should his wife be crying?” Dr. Watson wonders.
Walking around Baskerville Hall, Dr. Watson ran into Jack Stapleton, an entomologist out hunting butterflies. Stapleton knew about Holmes and Watson and seemed interested in the case. He helped Watson with a description of the area, pointing out the Neolithic ruins of stone huts as well as the dangers of the moor. While the two men were busy in this conversation, Beryl, Stapleton’s sister, suddenly arrived and, mistaking Watson for Sir Henry, warned him to leave the area.
As required by Holmes, Watson wrote a report on what he had found out: “The escaped convict”, Watson wrote, “has likely fled the area as he couldn't survive for long without food. Sir Henry appears to have developed a romantic interest in Beryl Stapleton and her brother doesn’t seem to approve. Sir Henry gave his old tweed suit to Barrymore. Barrymore’s wife continues to show signs of distress. I met Mr. Frankland, a friendly man who owns a telescope and watches the moor in search of the escaped convict”.
That same night Watson heard footsteps outside his room and saw Barrymore slipping into a room on the second floor with a candle in his hand.
