THE WALKING STICK
One day, Sherlock found someone’s walking stick in his living room: it was a fine, thick, piece of wood, bulbous-headed, of the sort which is known as a “penang lawyer”. Just below the head was a broad silver band almost an inch large. “To James Mortimer M.R.C.S., from his friends of the C.C.H.” it said. Then, a man called Mortimer entered the room. After the introductions, Mortimer read a manuscript from the Baskerville family. The infamous Hugo Baskerville became obsessed with a local young girl, whom he kidnapped one night, but she managed to escape. Enraged with the girl, Hugo made a pact with the devil and released his hounds in search of the young girl. Shortly after, both Hugo's and the girl’s bodies were found by his friends in the moorland. Hugo’s throat had been ripped out by a foul thing, a great, black beast, believed to be an evil hound. “Ever since”, Mortimer reported, “the supernatural hound has haunted the family, mysteriously killing all its male members. The hound has recently killed Sir Charles Baskerville, the latest owner of Baskerville Hall”.
