FOOTSTEPS IN THE NIGHT
When Watson woke up, he couldn’t wait to tell Sir Henry about Barrymore’s nocturnal activities. Sir Henry replied: “I’m not surprised, I also heard Barrymore going around late at night. Let’s stay up tonight and follow him”. Watson agreed and offered to follow Sir Henry, who was about to go out for a walk, but he refused because he preferred to be alone. Watson had received clear instructions from Holmes: “You mustn't let Sir Henry leave the house on his own” and therefore decided to keep a lookout. He clearly saw Sir Henry meeting Beryl Stapleton, but as soon as the two lovers realised that they were being watched they jumped apart. He also noticed Stapleton coming up running, looking enraged. That afternoon, Stapleton came to Baskerville Hall to apologise for his behaviour and to invite Sir Henry and Watson to dinner. He explained: “I am just a lonely guy who's come to depend on his sister's company to keep me from getting too isolated. I hadn't noticed that Beryl and Sir Henry were getting close, and I was surprised to hear of their potential engagement”.
Night came, Sir Henry and Watson observed Barrymore and caught him standing at a window with a candle in his hand. Sir Henry feared that his butler was betraying him, so he threatened to fire him, but suddenly Mrs. Barrymore appeared and cried: “You don’t understand, Selden is my brother and my poor husband is only helping him. We are leaving him food and clothes to survive in the moor”. Watson and Sir Henry listened to the Barrymore couple's explanations and decided to look for Selden. When in the moor, they heard a terrifying howl and got really scared. Soon after they found Selden and tried to catch him, but he managed to escape. Tired, scared and disappointed, they decided to go back home, but they noticed a man appearing in the moor, outlined against the moon; a split second later, the man was gone.
